Shadow Play
By: Honourable Fool
Theresas ankle, etched faintly, colorlessly, against the soft sand gently rippled beneath the waters surface, seemed strange to her as she contemplated it. She lifted her foot to the waters edge and watched it swirl around her toes elegantly, like a Victorian Lady. Leaning back on her hands on the rock she was witting on, she cocked her head to the side, her hair cascading over her shoulder, as she watched Richard. His camera lens flashed at her, reflecting the sun into her eyes as he angled it and took a picture.
Do I look a mermaid? She asked playfully. He gave her a strange look, but laughed anyway. She liked to be silly around him, because he never quite knew how to respond to it. For several minutes she watched him, entranced. His pants were rolled half-way up his calves as he waded in the shallow water, watching the shadow and light play, looking for good pictures. She loved him when he was taking pictures, the way his face was so serious, examining every tiny feature of a thing for the best possible angle, the way that little bit of skin between his eyes would get all scrunched up. She watched his hands, how steady they were holding the camera, how they cradled it, knowing exactly what to do. His forearms were beginning to tan from exposure, the dark hair standing out like hundreds of little black soldiers on the pavement below.
She shivered suddenly and pulled her legs out of the water, hugging them close to her chest. He looked over as she did this, pulled from his little world of concentration by her movement. But she was off in her own world, looking to some thing he could not see.
Theresa? he called. She blinked and looked over at him where he was still crouched by some small plant-life. Are you alright? Maybe we should
No, Im fine. It was just a cool breeze. She said, looking cheery. He continued to watch her with his dark, heavy eyes; eyes so deep
well, it was kind of cliché, but, they were like a deep underground pool, so deep that all you can see in it is your own reflection staring back at you.
You know what I was just thinking? She called out to him, tipping her head back so the sun through the trees played across her face. Wouldnt it be wonderful if we could just stay like this forever? The water and the light and the quiet
No life outside this one. No work, or school
Or parents?
She laughed at him. Im serious.
He smiled as he waded over to her, looking at her with those dark eyes up until the moment when he planted a light kiss on her upturned lips. It would only be dream.
But it would be a nice dream. One that we could remember and tell out grandchildren one day.
You arent making any sense.
Her face fell slightly. I suppose not.
He watcher her, wondering, after tomorrow, when would he see her again? Not for months. How much would she have changed again, changed without him? He looked down at his camera and smiled. You know what? I think we can stay here forever. She looked at him, skeptical. We can stay forever, right here, in the pictures I took today. You see? Well never leave. We will always be here, together. And one day, we can tell our grandkids. He smiled and kissed her on the forehead.
